Supplies

  • 4 ounce glass or plastic bottles with a spray top (I prefer dark to help the oils last longer)
  • Essential Oils - All your favorites or favorite combinations
  • Witch hazel - This helps the oils mix well with water
  • Distilled water - just in case your tap water has any scent or unnecessary extras
  • Mini funnel or bendable plastic cup, essential oil droppers if needed.

Making DIY Room Spray

These amber glass bottles came with a spray top and this cute little funnel.

However, if you don't have a little funnel you can use a plastic cup like the one above and pinch it to pour into your bottle.

Using dark bottles helps keep the light out from your home or the sun. This will keep them from expiring too soon.

I'm also using witch hazel to combine the oils with distilled water. Some people don't like the smell of witch hazel. You can substitute grain alcohol or a high-quality vodka. However, I think that these alcohols have their own scent so it's a matter of preference.

Distilled water is preferred over tap water because some people have added chemicals or sulfur which may contaminate or change the way the spray smells or works.

Essential Oil Room Spray Recipes

Here are a few general essential oil combinations that I like. Feel free to make your own blend. Note that some essential oils are very strong while others are not strong at all. When creating your own, start with a few drops and continue to add as much as you like until you get the scent you want.

Warm and Cozy Room Spray

to an 4 ounce bottle add:

  • Sweet Orange Essential oil - 30 drops
  • Cinnamon Essential Oil - 10 drops
  • Clove Essential Oil - 5 drops
  • 1/8 cup Witch Hazel
  • Distilled water

Relax & Unwind Room Spray

to an 4 oz bottle add:

  • Lavender Essential oil - 20 drops
  • Bergamot Essential Oil - 15 drops
  • Geranium Essential Oil - 5 drops
  • 1/8 cup Witch Hazel
  • Distilled water

Refresh & Uplift Room Spray

to an 4 ounce bottle add:

  • Lemon Essential oil - 30 drops
  • Grapefruit Essential Oil - 15 drops
  • Rosemary Essential Oil - 5 drops
  • 1/8 cup Witch Hazel
  • Distilled water

If you like my labels you can click on one and it will take you to a pdf filled with labels that you can print. I used this brown kraft paper and Mod Podge to create and glue my labels to the bottles but regular printer paper and white glue will work just fine.

Active Time10 minutes mins

Total Time10 minutes mins

Course: DIY Projects

Yield: 1

Author: Patti Estep

Cost: $10

Equipment

  • Essential oil dropper if needed

  • Plastic cup or funnel

  • Measuring cups or tablespoon measuring spoon

Materials

Instructions

  • Place 50 drops or combinations of essential oil drops in the bottom of an 4 ounce dark glass spray bottle.

  • Add 1/8 cup of witch hazel.

  • Add distilled water to the top approximately 1/3 cup.

  • Screw on the sprayer top.

  • Shake and spray wherever you like.

Notes

50 drops of essential oil is a rule of thumb. Some essential oils are very strong so you may not need as much. Conversely, some are not very strong and you may want more. You can experiment by starting with less, then add more until you reach your desired scent.

They make great gifts or a simple air freshener for your home.

I can’t wait to make some of these room sprays 👏🏻👏🏻 I was curious on the shelf life? 6 months to a year?
    Thank you!

Elaina, they seem to be fine for a few months. Especially if you make them in a dark bottle and keep them away from sunlight through the window. However, it may also depend on the oils. Lighter oils seem to degrade faster such as lemon verses strong oils such as clove last longer.

I would like to make your diy room sprays. I clicked on your link to the amber bottles and it looks like these are 4 oz bottles. However, your recipe is for an 8 oz bottle. Are the labels sized for a 4 or 8 oz bottle?

Cherie, those are the bottles I used so the labels will fit. I went in and adjusted the amounts to 4 oz. Thanks for letting me know.

FAQs

What alcohol is best for essential oil spray? ›

Yes, you can use alcohol, but it needs to be a high-proof grain alcohol (such as Everclear). Cheap vodka won't do. According to formulation expert Ginger L. Moore, it must contain at least 60% ethanol (120 proof) in order to preserve a water-based spray.

How many drops of essential oil do I need to make a room spray? ›

DIY Room Spray Recipe

1 cup water (again, distilled is best but filtered will work) 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol or witch hazel. 20-30 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice.

What is the ratio of essential oils to water in a spray bottle? ›

For a stronger scent, mix 2 oz. of water in your spray bottle with 15 to 25 drops of essential oils. For a milder scent, a good guideline is 20 drops of essential oil in 4 oz. of water.

What is the strongest home deodorizer? ›

Nature's Miracle Original Stain and Odor Remover has a powerful formula designed to tackle pet messes like urine, feces, vomit, and drool. It is an enzymatic cleaner and odor remover, meaning it contains good bacteria that release enzymes to break down organic material.

What are the ingredients in homemade room spray? ›

Homemade room spray
  • A clean spray bottle: I used one of these amber glass bottles from Amazon.
  • Your favorite essential oil (I used vanilla, but eucalyptus, lavender, geranium, or peppermint would all work beautifully)
  • Distilled water.
  • Unscented witch hazel: available at Walmart.

Why add salt to essential oil spray? ›

WHAT YOU NEED: 4oz Distilled Water - It is very important that you used distilled water in order to maintain freshness. 2tsp Witch Hazel or Vodka OR a 1/4 tsp of sea salt - Either of these will act to disperse the essential oils into the water better.

How do you make a custom room spray? ›

A DIY room spray needs a few common ingredients to work. The base of the room spray is water, and many recipes use distillation to purify the water. Essential oils are added for scent, and then an emulsifier is added to make sure the water and oils mix. This can be alcohol, witch hazel, sea salt, or another emulsifier.

What can I mix with essential oils to make spray? ›

The alcohol / witch hazel will help the essential oils and water mix together in an even spray; use distilled water unless you want to disperse tap water minerals all over your room. A 3:1 ratio of water to alcohol / witch hazel works perfectly – add the alcohol to the bottle first, then your drops of essential oil.

Can I mix rubbing alcohol and essential oils? ›

I mix the essential oils with alcohol and water.

Since essential oils do not mix with water, ethanol is used to solubilize ("dissolve") essential oils into the water without too much separation. You can use ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, but it needs to be at least 95% alcohol.

How to make concentrated room spray? ›

Add 10 drops of each of the essential oils of your choosing (my favorite mixture is vanilla, stress away and lavender), to a 4 oz glass bottle. Add 1 TBS witch hazel to the glass bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Optional, use an embossing label maker to make a label and apply it to your bottle.

What percentage of essential oil in room spray? ›

Ready-made aromas. If you are still unsure about which aromas to choose, try using fragrance oil in your room spray. We recommend using 25% of fragrance oil in your mixture with distilled water. 25% of fragrance oil will smell super strong, so you may wish to reduce this depending on your preferences.

How much fragrance oil to add to room spray? ›

Add fragrance at 8-10% volume of base solution (approximately 2 to 2.4 tsp. per 4 oz. bottle). Fragrance strengths and personal preference differ, so it's a good idea to start with a relatively small amount of fragrance.

Can you put essential oils in water and spray it? ›

You can also mix oils in a spray bottle with water and use it to spritz surfaces, furniture, linens and the inside of your car. Here are some other ways you can use essential oils aromatically.
